Remembering the Revd George Bush

We are very saddened by the death of the Revd George Bush, who was the chair of Hoppers trustees from 2005 until 2024. During this time, we benefited from his expertise, his glorious prayers, his warmth as well as his learning and irrepressible good humour. We are grateful to George for his commitment to Hoppers alongside his exceptional and busy ministry at St Mary-le-Bow in the City of London.
George’s ministry took him to many contrasting places. Ordained in 1985, George began his ministry at St Aidan’s in inner-city Leeds. He then became chaplain at St John’s College, Cambridge, where he had been a student. From there he became Vicar of St Anne’s, Hoxton, and whilst there he brought many groups to stay at Hoppers.
In 2002 George was appointed Rector of St Mary-le-Bow, the historic Wren church in Cheapside. He served there for more than two decades, retiring in 2024. Whilst there George was chaplain to the Lord Mayor of London and chaplain to several City organisations. He supported charities concerned with regeneration, Fairtrade, mental health and social investment.
We remember George with gratitude and affection. His legacy is one of commitment to others, deeply rooted faith, public service and a wonderful sense of fun. At the front of Hoppers we have planted a rose, George’s Rose, in memory of him. May he rest in peace and rise in glory.
